about
Alan Tyne of Harrow
Alvin’s [Robert Harbron]
A “goodnight ballad” from the singing of John Faulkner, who learned this version from Ewan MacColl. There is an almost identical highwayman ballad in Ireland called Valentine O’Hara. Ned (Henry) Fielding makes an appearance – what a great brag for a highwayman to say he bought his horse from the founder of the Bow Street Runners. Inhabiting the murky twilight between a march and a schottische, ‘Alvin’s’ is named in honour of a small donkey with magnetic hooves and personality.
